While Flying is not a mandatory course at Hogwarts, students practically ran to class this year in hopes to learn a trick or two (and perhaps to snag an autograph) from a quidditch A-lister. So what is a quidditch star like Colin Mackenzie doing teaching at Hogwarts? Keep reading to find out.
Hello, Professor. You were involved in the Professional Quidditch League for quite some time. Why did you leave it for Hogwarts?
It seems like it was only yesterday I was keeper and captain for the Montrose Magpies and the England National Quidditch Team... you know, before my time as coach and manager for the Magpies. But I'm still part of that world to this day as the Magpies owner. Though, when I saw that the Flying instructor role was open at Hogwarts, I couldn't let the opportunity pass. Training those who want to hone their flying skills has always been rewarding, so the school seemed like a great place to provide that service.
With that in mind, what did you enjoy most about your role as Flying Instructor?
I personally enjoyed sharing my love of flying and Quidditch with today's youth and assisting them in developing their flying abilities and, for those who have the desire to do so, improving the odds of being a part of the Quidditch League in the future. The experience has certainly made me excited to train up my grandson when he's old enough to hop on a broom himself.
Quidditch is a dangerous sport. Why do you think it's worth the risk?
In my opinion, Quidditch is no more dangerous than anything else in this world. Dangerous scenarios and accidents can occur no matter what you're doing or where you are, so the risk is always there. But, at the end of the day, if you aren't taking risks then you are just settling for living day by day like a flobberworm rather than challenging yourself.
That may be the case, though there are plenty of ways to challenge oneself. As far as lessons go, you taught us the Sloth Grip Roll, but what is your personal favourite broom tactic?
As a former Keeper, my favourite tactic has always been the Starfish and Stick. A very risky move, but you cannot deny its effectiveness at blocking Quaffles when done right. Strongly recommend wearing gear for that tactic, unless you’re alright with ending up in a hospital bed with a cracked noggin or some broken bones.
I’d rather not end up in a hospital bed, thanks. Speaking of unfortunate situations, the mist had a direct impact on Quidditch this year and left many students in a state of disappointment. How did you feel about the mist in your capacity as the Quidditch Official?
Believe me when I say that I was just as disappointed as everyone else. That bloody mist ruined our entire tournament and made indoor Flying lessons a challenge. I'm still pretty salty about it, honestly.
